Evaluating a Clotting Enzyme in Dogs with Protein Losing Nephropathy
Plasma ADAMTS13 activity in dogs with protein losing nephropathy
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to evaluate a clotting enzyme, ADAMTS13, in dogs with protein losing nephropathy (PLN) compared to healthy dogs.
Background
Protein losing nephropathy is a kidney disease that causes protein loss in urine and a high risk of blood clots in dogs. Because humans with kidney disease show a deficiency in the clot-preventing enzyme ADAMTS13, studying this enzyme in dogs may explain why these clots occur. This information could eventually lead to better diagnostic tools and targeted treatments for canine patients.
Eligibility
- Dogs diagnosed with Protein Losing Nepropathy based on bloodwork and urinalysis
- Dogs must have a UPC of ≥ 2 with no evidence of pre- or post-renal proteinuria
Exclusion Criteria
- Dogs with major concurrent disease unrelated to their PLN
Study Design
Dogs presenting with PLN that meet the criteria will receive a renal panel, urinalysis with urine protein to creatinine ratio (UPC). Extra blood will be drawn to evaluate ADAMTS13. Results from the renal panel, urinalysis and UPC will be shared with the pet's attending clinician.
Compensation
The cost of the research exam, renal blood panel, urinalysis with UPC, and study-specific sample will be covered by the study.
